Sixty-four engravings by Kip, the Dutch engraver, were included in Sir Robert Atkyns’ The Ancient and Present State of Glostershire, posthumously published in 1712. Individual engravings are often reproduced to illustrate an article or to show what a house looked like, for instance in the Buildings of Gloucestershire. The whole set was reprinted in 1974 in a large format, together with a separate volume reproducing Atkyns’ text, but they are cumbersome and expensive books to buy second-hand. The newly-published book offers all sixty-four engravings, reproduced in a manageable but larger format than is usual, has an introduction exploring what is known of the life of Johannes (or John if Anglicised) Kip, and has a commentary on each engraving, suggesting some of the context and interesting detail of each. And this at a very modest price of £20.
Anthea Jones will present a selection of the interesting features in this talk.
