Visiting the Centre
Opening Times
The Centre is open to all (members and non-members of the society alike). Entry is free of charge although donations are very welcome.
Currently the Centre will open on
- Tuesday, Wednesday. Thursday and Friday
- Sessions can be booked in the morning (10:00 – 12:30 ) and afternoon(13:30 – 16:00)
We will be closed on Bank Holidays and for an extended period at Christmas.
The Centre will be open on Heritage Hub “Saturday Event” days and there will be no need to book. See details in the calendar of events on the Home Page
Booking
We are operating a booking system and find that it visits can be much more productive if we know you are coming and what you want to do.. Please use this form to reserve a place and give us at least 3 days notice of your proposed visit. You can also email us at booking@gfhs.org.uk if you have further queries.
If coming to visit from a distance please call us to see if we have the data you need or to book a computer or fiche reader.
Other facilities
Car Parking is available. (a small charge is made by Gloucestershire Archives for all day parking).
The Centre has Disabled Access. If you have any concerns about visiting, then please phone us. Our Volunteers will be pleased to help and, if required, we can arrange for a dedicated helper, or for searches of our resources to be done on your behalf
About the Centre
Visit us and chat to our friendly group of experienced volunteers.
The Centre is a spacious area within the Heritage Hub where you can research your Family and local history from any part of the world, with particular emphasis on Gloucestershire. We are here to help you as a beginner, a seasoned researcher or you can be left to your own devices knowing that help is at hand.
GFHS Reception Desk a volunteer will ask you sign in and allocated a computer. Families, friends and use of you own laptops are welcome. A small charge is made to print out your search results.
Our area of interest
The Society’s local interest is in the Towns & Parishes of Gloucestershire as listed by GENUKI.
Centre Facilities
Free access to a suite of twelve computers, well stocked reference library with local books of historical interest covering many parishes and place names, Monumental and Memorial Inscriptions and a selection of Kelly’s Directories to name but a few. Publications are available for sale from our book shop.
A relaxation area includes tables, to mingle and chat with other researchers and get refreshments from the kitchen area. Lockers are provided for your valuables
Research Resources and Library
The Centre houses all our Research Material. The Society produces, publishes and sells indexes of Gloucestershire records. Full details of our items can be seen in each copy of The Journal or in our on-line Shop or obtained from the Family History Centre. See more
Our Library contains hundreds of titles covering a wide range of family history topics including the latest copies of Who Do You Think You Are magazine. See more
Where to find us
The Family History Centre is located in Gloucester City Centre within the Heritage Hub and is well posted from London Road & Kingsholm Road. It’s just a 10 minute walk if you choose to travel by Bus or Train.

Projects
The Society is continually engaged in Projects to make resource material more accessible to its Members and the general public. The Society is undertaking several projects to help the digitisation of local records etc. See more.
Offers of help from Volunteers are always welcome.
Volunteers
The Society is run entirely by Volunteers who give their time in many ways :
- as Officers of the Society
- to staff the Family History Centre
- help in ongoing transcription projects (see below)
- to staff Helpdesks in local libraries
- to staff stalls at various Family History Fairs in the Region
