About the Society

A warm welcome to Gloucestershire Family History Society

We are a very active society, with over 1,000 enthusiastic family historians, based in Gloucester, the surrounding area and across the UK as well as worldwide. Gloucestershire Family History Society has reportedly the best Family History Centre in the country and the society is over 40 years old, having been established in 1979.

We aim to give members many opportunities to interact with the Society, its volunteers and fellow members, Most months of the year, there are talks online  from a wide range of fascinating speakers, and we are again expanding events at the Family History Centre and collaborating with Gloucestershire Archive and other partners at The Heritage Hub.

Members can communicate online via our Facebook Group page. Other social media channels include twitter and an option to subscribe to receive news as it happens (links can be found at the bottom of each page on this website).

Our quarterly Journal, full of news and articles, is distributed in either print or electronic form to our members worldwide. The Journal Editor welcomes contributions of articles or news for inclusion in a future edition.

Of course, a big part of our time as family historians is taken up with research and discovering more information about those we are interested in. Our members, via our Members Interest Page, are able to detail names they are working on, with the aim of finding others with similar surname interests.

We are particularly proud of two twenty year projects, the Births Marriages and Deaths(BMD) free to view via this website, and Cemetery Register transcriptions, the former in collaboration with the registrar’s office, the latter because the registers were falling into disrepair.

This website brings together a large amount of information for both members and non-members researching family history in Gloucestershire, although we do of course hope that any non-members using our resources will see the benefit of joining us and receiving all the member benefits. Not only are can you join you can also become more involved in volunteering and help others

You can find out more about the work of the Society and what we have to offer  by exploring this website (start with the links on the menu on the left). If you cannot find the answers within these pages, do please contact either me or any other of the officials, who would be delighted to help you.

Enjoy your time researching with us
