Explore the Parish Chest: Beyond the Registers: Claire O’Grady: Online
As well as having an ecclesiastical function, the parish was and is the smallest civil administrative unit in England and Wales. As a result, the parish generated a wide range of documents that go beyond the registering of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials.
This talk delves into the genealogical treasure to be found in the parish chest including:
- Churchwardens’ accounts
- Vestry Minutes
- Poor law administration
- Bastardy Bonds.
We will look at why the documents were created and what types of information they can contain with examples from the archives.
Clare is a professional genealogist of over 10 years experience with an MSc from the University of Strathclyde. Her own family tree had kept her busy for over 20 years and her family so far has links in Herefordshire, Northamptonshire and the Republic of Ireland. Working as a researcher in a local archive also means that she is always discovering new ways of looking at family history and enriching our knowledge of those that have gone before.
