About the Society

Society Projects

Our volunteers have completed a number of projects over the years and some are continuing. We welcome offers of help and ideas for new projects.

Details below cover our ongoing  and most recently completed projects. Information from earlier projects is available in Digital Downloads or within the Family History Centre.

Gloucestershire Births, Marriages and Deaths

The dedicated group of volunteers have continued transcribing and checking
registers and all districts now have deaths up to 1945 with approximately 18,000
records added to the website.

The next stage is adding births for all districts up to 1950; this should be completed later this year.

A small number of marriage registers have also been added:

  • Frampton Mansell St Luke 2015-2017
  • Beverstone St Mary 2009-2018
  • Whelford St Anne Chapel of Ease 2011-2019
  • Bromsberrow St Mary 1999-2015
  • Teddington St Nicholas 2006-2017
  • Bledington Bretheren Meeting Room in Stow on the Wold 1999-2012
  • Westcote Methodist 2008-2019
  • Dursley St Dominic’s 2012-2020
  • Parkend Kingdom Hall 1980-2019

The Registration Service together with Gloucestershire County Council
are still working on the Civil Partnerships and, although they are not yet available
on ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd, progress is being made.

Memorial Inscriptions and Burial Index

This index now has all the MIs & Burial Lists that GFHS have either in the
library or on the PCs in the Family History Centre. There are now approximately
600,000 records included in the index which has names, ages where known, date
of death or burial, place and a reference to where further information may be
found. You can search the index here.

One significant addition has been the inclusion of the Stroud Cemetery records
from 1856-2025 with over 15,000 entries giving names, ages, year and a
reference. These are only available for viewing at the Family History Centre and,
using the reference, further information can be obtained from Stroud Town
Council. Our thanks go to Shelley Dyte, Admin Officer at the Council.

On MIs, Westbury on Severn continues to be photographed and indexed,
parts of which are included in the above index and are available for viewing in
the Family History Centre.

War Memorials and Rolls of Honour

There are now over 35,000 names and more than 1,300 memorials. The index gives, where known, name, age, rank, regiment and year of death. This is available at the Family History Centre and there is a picture for most memorials.

The following parishes are not included in the index: –

  • Ashley
  • Bevington
  • Duntisbourne Rouse
  • Hinton
  • Little Washbourne
  • Newington Bagpath
  • Shorncote
  • Welsh Bicknor
  • Woodmancote (near Bishops Cleeve)
  • If any member has a photo of a memorial or any information regarding the above please let us know.

Gloucester Borough Copy Leases project

As a result of a bequest we were able to organise the photographing of the main source of information of property ownership in Gloucester: the Borough Copy leases. This shows details of the main owners of property in Gloucester over the centuries were the Borough Council, the Dean and Chapter of Gloucester Cathedral, Llanthony Priory and various charitable organisations such as St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Volunteers transcribed and indexed the information and you can find more details and search the index here.
