The Glosters in Burma: Rob Dixon

9 November @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

The Gloucestershire Regiment provided 2 Battalions for the Burma Campaign in the Second World War. Between them they exemplified the title of Field Marshall Slim’s renowned account of that campaign ‘Defeat into Victory’.

The 1st Battalion was a regular battalion stationed in Rangoon with their families before the war broke out. For most of the retreat back to India they were the rear-guard holding the Japanese at bay.

The 10th Battalion was formed for the duration of the war comprised mainly of those called up for war service. Under Slim they were in the forefront of the drive to expel the Japanese invaders from 1944 to the end.

No punches will be pulled in describing the campaign from its shambolic start to its victorious end. Have the lessons been learnt? And a reflection on Myanmar today will round it off.

The talk will be given by Lt Col (Retd) Rob Dixon, a former commanding officer of The Glosters. Much of his research is from unpublished documents held by The Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum.
