However the volunteers and members of the Society have a wealth of information about the way to find about your ancestors here. We are therefore collating frequently asked questions (and answers!) from members and others. As you see we are calling it “Tips and Hints” to describe better the style of what we want to bring together.

Interesting New Records

At her talk on 14 April Rose Hewlett explained  how village records can help add depth and detail to our understanding of our ancestors. Amongst the interesting newly published records are the proceedings of the Courts of Sewers.

Rose Hewlett’s edited transcription of the records associated with land drainage and sea defence along the Severn Estuary’s east bank contains more than 600 surnames plus variants. The people (male and female) come from all walks of life, and a large proportion can be identified to their tithing or parish. You may even be able to discover exactly where they lived and the fields they owned or rented. More details
